SC Senator Among the Victims of Charleston Church Shooting

Nine people are dead after a shooting Wednesday night at a historic black church in Charleston, South Carolina, in an attack officials describe as a “hate crime.”
The pastor of the the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal church, a popular State Senator, was among the victims.
Clementa Pinckney, 41, is a well-known leader in the community and civil rights advocate.
The police have yet to formally confirm the identity of the other victims, but Charleston Police Chief Greg Mullen said six women and three men were killed. Charleston Mayor Joe Riley said, “The only reason someone would walk into a church and shoot people that were praying is out of hate.” He described the scene as “the most heartbreaking … I have ever witnessed in my life.”

South Carolina state senator and Church’s pastor was among the nine shot inside a Charleston church. 41-year-old Reverend Clementa Pinckney was leading a study session Wednesday evening at the Emanuel AME church when a young white man opened fired on the group. Pinckney was a married man and father of two. He was known as a civil rights leader who was elected to the state house at age 23, making him the youngest member of the House at the time. Authorities labeled the shooting a hate crime and according to police, Eight of the nine victims died inside the church. The ninth died later at a nearby hospital. Police have not identified any of the six women or three men who died in the bloodbath, but friends named Pinckney as one of the victims. Authorities are in the hunt for the shooter, but the FBI identified the suspect as 21 year old Dylann Roof.
