Are Shock Collars For Dogs Cruel? The Truth About Dog Training With Shock Collars

Are shock collars for dogs cruel? The short answer is yes.

“To use shock as an effective dog training method you will need three things:

• A through understanding of canine behavior.
• A through understanding of learning theory.
• Impeccable timing.

And if you have those three things, you don’t need a shock collar. “

– Dr. Ian Dunbar

A shock collar gives your dog an electrical shock which can be automated or administered on command from a remote control.

I go crazy when I hear an unsuspecting dog owner being told “Don’t worry, the shock doesn’t hurt the dog…they will just feel a tingle.”

This is a lie.

Shock collars are a form of positive punishment.

Positive punishment by definition is: a stimulus that occurs after a given behavior or response which reduces the likelihood of that behavior occurring again in the future.

So in order to reduce the likelihood of the behavior from occurring again, the electric shock from the collar HAS TO HURT! If it didn’t hurt, than nothing is taking place that is reducing the likelihood of the bad behavior.

I sometimes just have to laugh because the conversation about shock collars causing pain is so ridiculous. A dog owners gets a shock collar for their dog, but then they are worried about turning it up too high because it will hurt their dog too much. But if you are worried about hurting your dog, why did you buy a shock collar in the first place?

I’m sorry, but there is no right way to hurt a dog. End of story.

And shock collars DO in fact hurt your dog, it is basic operant conditioning.

Home2K9 Dog Training: Basic information about the safe use and application of prong collars.

Views:10008|Rating:4.21|View Time:13:30Minutes|Likes:102|Dislikes:19
Prong collars often get a bad rap because of inappropriate fit and use. When applied correctly, a prong collar can offer life changing information for your dog, and resolve extremely unwanted behaviors for you. Prong collars offer directional pressure, supplying “power steering” information or feedback to your dog about how and where they should move their body.

Keys to properly using a prong collar include:

Purchase a good quality collar, such as a Herm Sprenger.

Size the collar to stay high on the neck by adding or removing links before use. DO NOT purchase a collar, slide it OVER your dog’s head, and call it done. You can do more harm than good if you do not fit the collar correctly.

Apply a carabiner clip to the “dead ring” (the perfectly round one) and your dog’s standard flat collar, as a fail safe in the event your prong collar comes undone.

Remove your dog’s prong collar if he/she is playing, wresting, crated, or sleeping for long stretches. Prolonged pressure on the collar from resting on the prongs could irritate your dog’s skin.

Dog trainer Cameron Thompsen, owner of Home2K9 Dog Training, provides in-home dog training as well as Board and Train services in North County San Diego and the surrounding San Diego area. Obedience training commands include: heel, sit, down, come, no, yes, good, okay, out, drop it and the place command. Cameron’s behavior modification program is performed with the application of low-level, e-collar, off-leash, advanced obedience training.

Its crucial to use E collar and prong collars properly and the last thing we want to do is constantly stress our dogs out while training.
